My Visit to the Circus
I
like to go to the circus very much. There is a very good circus in Kharkiv. It
is situated in the centre of the city not far from The 4-th Avenue Underground Station. Last time my
brother, my mother and I went to the circus during my winter holidays. First we
went by underground to the Metro Station "The 4TH
Avenue" and then we went to the circus on
foot. We left our coats in the cloak-room and then went to the hall. At the
entrance we bought a programme of the show. Then we went and took our seats.
Our seats were not far from the ring and we could see everything very well. The
first part of the performance was very interesting — we saw many circus
performers: acrobats, rope walkers, jugglers and clowns. The clowns were very
funny and everybody applauded them. During the performance the circus band was
playing music all the time. The band was conducted by the band leader. Then
came the interval. During the interval we went to the bar and bought ice-cream,
cotton-candy and a bottle of Coca-Cola. In the second part there were wild
animals. Most of all I liked tigers and lions. They were sitting in a large cage
and performed various tricks. The animal trainer was very brave and spectators
applauded a lot. There were also bears riding bicycles and dogs playing
football. After the performance we took our coats and went home. On the way
home we discussed the performance and everything that we had seen in the
circus. I liked the visit to the circus very much.

T. You can reach England either by plane, by train, by car or by plane. You can reach London in a couple of hours. Today you will have a great opportunity to visit it right now without leaving your places and just in a few minutes: that is by means of our new technology-video(DVD). Now when we know much about the capital of Great Britain, you will have a brilliant chance to watch a film about it and generalize your knowledge about this famous place of the world.
Before watching, let’s brainstorm your ideas. When you hear this word, what occurs into your mind? Have you got any associations? (Pupils’ ideas)
T. Let’s group them doing Word Window (explanatory word: buskers)
Teacher is writing them on the board and pupils into their copies
T. You seem to know a lot about London but many things are still unknown for you. Before you watch, try this quiz Window “Do you know the following about London?” (pupils try to predict the answers)
T. We can watch a video. After watching we will go back to this quiz and you are supposed to answer all the questions you didn’t know. While watching, be attentive. After the film is over, we will watch it in 3 sequences and you will do some exercises. Remind some explanatory notes : punk, Mohican, AB, BC, pedestrians, staff, variety, rush.

Friendship is a Very Great Thing
Do you remember the English proverbs about friendship which you have discussed already? Here they are: “A friend in need is a friend indeed”, “A good friend is the sun in winter”, “A friend is easier lost than found”, “A friend to everybody is a friend to nobody”.
Friendship is a very great thing and that’s why people of all countries have so many proverbs about it. As you do not know all English proverbs about friends and friendship, here are some more. Take, for example, this one: “A friend is never known till a man has need”.
What does it mean? It means that the best friend is the one who helps you when you are really in need of help. You know your real friends when you are in a difficult situation.
The second proverb is “A friend is not so soon gotten as lost”. The meaning of this proverb is that it takes a long time to become really friendly with somebody. But there are many ways of quickly losing a friend if you do something wrong. So you must try to keep a friendship.
Another English proverb is “Before you make a friend, eat a bushel of salt with him’.
Of course, you need not eat much salt to become good friends but you must know your friend very well. If you help each other and do useful and important things together, your friendship will last a very long time.
The words “friendship” and “comradeship” are very close to each other in meaning. Friends and comrades may have the same interests; they understand, help, respect and trust each other.
Questions for discussion:
1. What English proverbs about friendship do you remember?
3. How long have you know your real friend? What sort of boy (girl) is he (she)?
4. Have you ever helped someone with his/her school work? Have those pupils become your comrades
(friends)?
5. What will you do if a boy (girl) comes up to you and says, “I should like you to be a friend with
me”?

There are many different ways to talk about the future in English. We use different verb tenses depending on what we want to say about the future.
In this lesson, we will learn how to talk about intentions andarrangements in the future.
In this lesson, we will learn how to talk about intentions andarrangements in the future.
Intentions
An intention is something that we would like to do in the future. These are general plans for the future.
When we are talking about an intention, we have not taken specific, concrete steps to achieve the action. We are just talking about something that we hope to do in the future.
When we want to talk about our intentions in the future, we must use thefuture with going to.
This is the most correct way to talk about general plans for the future.
Example:
Correct: Someday, I'm going to learn how to dance!
Incorrect: Someday, I will learn how to dance!
We don't generally use the simple future with will to talk about intentions. The best way to talk about intentions is with the future with going to.
Review the rules on how to form the future with going to here before reviewing the examples below.

More examples:
- Bill is so tired! He is going to take a nice, long vacation this year.
(Bill doesn't have any specific plan for a vacation. He just knows he needs one!)

- I'm going to learn to swim and dive so I won't feel scared anymore!
(He doesn't know when or how he will learn, but he would like to.)

- Ron says he is going to start eating healthy someday.
(He has no specific diet plan or a date to change the way he eats.)

- I know smoking is bad for me. I'm going to quit sometime this year.
(He doesn't know when he will quit, but he wants to.)

- He is going to be just like his father when he grows up.
(He would like to be just like his father when he is a grown man.)

Arrangements
An arrangement is a specific plan that we have for the future. We have taken real steps to be sure we achieve this plan.
For example, we have called to reserve a table at a restaurant or we have bought a plane ticket.
When we are talking about arrangements, we use the present progressive.
Correct: I'm seeing my doctor tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock. I made the appointment last week.
Incorrect: I will see my doctor tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock. I made the appointment last week.
Because we have made an appointment with the doctor, this is an arrangement. We must use the present progressive to talk about arrangements, not the simple future with will.
Review the rules and formation of the present progressive here before reading the examples below.

More examples:
- Christina is meeting Melanie for coffee this afternoon. They reserved a table at their favorite café.
(They made specific plans and reserved the table ahead of time.)

- Denny is starting a new job on Monday. He just had his final interview. He's excited!
(Denny has made all the arrangements at the office and signed a contract.)

- Brad is having a garage sale this weekend. He's put out signs and organized everything he wants to sell.
(He has advertised for the garage sale. It is set for this weekend.)

- Maggie and Ginger are going to the vet this afternoon at 6 o'clock. It's time for Ginger's annual check-up!
(They already have an appointment with the vet.)

- Fred and Joe are traveling to Las Vegas in July. They have their tickets and are very happy about their trip!
(They have already bought tickets and made reservations for a specific date.)

The difference between an intention and an arrangement is the amount of planning we have done.
If we only have a general idea of something we would like to do in the future, it is an intention. In this case, we must use the future with going to.
If we have specific plans, reservations, or an appointment, we are talking about an arrangement. In this case, we must use the present progressive.
